Threatened Sites

Take a look at the map of Pueblo County. The corridor includes about 20% of the County! If HB1030 passes FRTR will be free to condemn a path anywhere in this corridor for their road. They say it will end at Stem Beach but if they decide to go on through Hatchet Ranch to Colorado City they can do that.

The Chieftain has reported in recent years on Chico Basin Ranch. This 85,000 acre ranch was acquired by the State to be operated as a nature reserve. Then Attorney General John Slazar (now a US Representative) was instrumental in setting this land aside for the public. I'm not sure of its location but it can hardly miss being in the corridor. I emailed the Ranch and they don't know what the effect on them will be because they can't get any answers. Imagine the effect on the hiking and horse trails if a highway and railroad cuts it in two.

I would think Pantaleo Farms is very threatened. This is the farm that has a pumpkin patch, hay rides, etc. in the Fall. One map shows the road crossing the Arkansas River east of the Nyberg bridge and then angling southwest to Stem Beach. It must cross South Road and 40th Lane in the vicinity of this farm.

Of course there are dozens of other farms effected. I just know of that one because of their events and website. Musso, Mauro Farms, DiSanti, Dionisio, Thomas Produce, Centa, DiTomaso, Rinks, Thatcher, Vail, Vold and how many others? Which ones will get the bum's rush?

It seems likely that this road would be east of the airport and west of the Depot and Test Track. There are only a couple of miles between these. The Chico Creek pioneer cemetery is in this space as is the area where six people recently died in a plane crash. The land owner has given permission for a memorial to be placed there. It won't be there long if the Slab comes through.
